Pysanky Eggs with Basia Andrusko

Explore the art, symbolism and joy in creating Pysanky. You will be guided through all the steps of transforming a plain egg into a work of art. Adult and/or teen students will learn the age-old Ukrainian method of writing Pysanky. We will apply a series of melted beeswax and dyes to create traditional and individually creative patterns. When complete, the wax is melted off, revealing the vivid colors. When appropriate, students will have the option of turning their Pysanky into unique seasonal ornaments. No experience necessary.

Materials (eggs, stylus, dyes, wax…) and instruction will be provided to make one or two Pysanky, within the scope of the class. Kits will also be available for purchase, so that students can continue to make Pysanky and wax-resist batik-style eggs at home, for all seasons and occasions. Finished work of instructor may also be available for purchase.

About the Artist

Basia has been writing Pysanky for over four decades, gathered around the stove in the kitchen during Lent to carry on the Ukrainian tradition. She finds the creative process very soothing and meditative, and looks forward to the moment of melting off the wax  — the reveal of the design. She writes pysanky with traditional patterns, but also enjoys creating egg art with fresh interpretations and original designs. She feels it is her duty and privilege to share this folk art with those interested and future generations.
