Japanese Dye Techniques with Gina Tavelli

Come experiment with this traditional Japanese dye resist techniques still used in many cultures.

Shibori: 2-day class: April 28th & 29th

Batik: 2-day class – May 12th & 13th

Sat 9:30 to 4:00pm w/ a 30 min break at noon (bring a bagged lunch.) &

Sunday 9:30 – 12pm.


Shibori technique involves the  folding and clamping of fabric as the resist to multiple layers of dye baths. By twisting and wrapping fabric you can invent a pattern of your own. We will use cotton and silk charmeuse.

Bring rubber gloves, newspaper if available.

Batik is hot wax design technique . You can sketch out a design or explore free form.

Melted bee and paraffin waxes are applied with a long brush or jungting onto fabric as a resist to multiple dye baths. A new layer of wax is applied after each color when cloth has dried.

Crackle is one effect that can happen to wax areas before the final dye. All the wax is removed by running an iron on top of newspaper at the end. Cotton muslin will be provided
